2019 Fantasy Outlook
Gibbons hasn't been able to consistently earn a starting role in the NHL. Last season, with two of the worst teams in the league -- the Ducks and the Senators -- the 31-year-old played 64 games, scoring eight goals and 19 points. He's actually been a pretty productive player when given the opportunity, posting a 14.5 shooting percentage in 189 NHL games during his career, but he won't have enough offensive upside to warrant fantasy consideration in 2019-20. Gibbons will look to earn a spot in the Hurricanes bottom six during training camp in September. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Gibbons' return to the minors leaves the Hurricanes with just 12 healthy forwards, so it could be a sign that Jordan Martinook (abdomen) will be activated ahead of Friday's game against the Ducks. Gibbons averaged fewer than 11 minutes of ice time in his two appearances and recorded only one shot on goal, so his demotion shouldn't shake up the fantasy picture in many leagues.

Gibbons came out of nowhere for the Devils last season, posting 12 goals, 26 points and a plus-10 rating over 59 games in his first NHL action since the 2014-15 campaign. The 30-year-old career AHLer parlayed that success into a one-year, $1 million deal with Anaheim, where he should occupy a bottom-six role. Even expecting him to repeat last season's numbers may be asking too much, as Gibbons hasn't even had an AHL season with more than 36 points.
Formerly signed by Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent, Gibbons has found moderate success (22 points in 66 regular season games) in both Pittsburgh and Columbus over the past two seasons. The 27-year-old has shown an ability to find the scorer’s sheet at almost any level he’s played at, but it's unlikely he sees much of an extended opportunity with the Rangers. The forward will likely spend the majority of his 2015-16 campaign with AHL Hartford.
The 5-foot-8, 160-pound Gibbons made his professional debut in 2011-12 after four years with Boston College. The smallish forward averaged better than a point per game his final two collegiate seasons and registered 78 and 79 penalty minutes, respectively. In his first year with AHL Wilkes-Barre, Gibbons collected 11 goals and 30 points in 70 games. His lack of size makes him a longshot to play in the NHL, but if he can score then just might make it.
An undrafted forward who played four seasons at Boston College, Gibbons signed a two-year entry contract with Pittsburgh in April of 2011. The 5-foot-8, 155-pounder served as an assistant captain for the Eagles and scored 18 goals and totaled 51 points in 39 games as a senior. He'll likely start his professional career with ECHL Wheeling.
