Nolan is a rough-and-tumble fourth-liner who played in 69 games with the Sabres last season, scoring four goals and eight points with 69 PIM. Players like Nolan are plentiful in the NHL but they're also going out of style as the game caters to skill over toughness, but he was signed to a one-year, two-way contract by the Blues. His use is limited and the Blues expect a number of their rookies to earn roster spots, so Nolan will likely split the season between the AHL and the NHL. Nolan's fantasy value is derived only from his physical play and penalty minutes.
Nolan played in just 46 games during the 2016-17 season, his lowest total in four seasons and scored just four goals and eight points. Cut by the Kings at the end of training camp, Nolan was claimed by the Sabres and will likely play a fourth-line role. The hope is that he can bring some physicality, speed and Cup-winning experience to a young Sabres team. Nolan's scored just four goals in his past two seasons, so he won't bring very much to the table in fantasy other than providing a healthy dose of hits and penalty minutes.
Nolan got into a career-high 64 games with the Kings and seemed to have carved out a spot in the lineup on most nights. But then came the postseason and he sat in the press box for all but three games. The emergence of Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli figures to put a further crunch on Nolan's role. He's only a fantasy target in PIM leagues if he can work his way into the lineup on a regular basis.
Nolan gives the Kings some energy and grit, and shows occasional flashes of puck skills, but is best suited in his current role on the fourth line. He has the size and speed to be a very effective player in that role, but won't bring much (other than hits) to your fantasy squad.
Nolan took advantage of a February call-up and held onto a roster spot for the remainder of the season, filling a fourth-line role for the Kings; he had four points in 26 games. He'll compete for a similar role again in training camp.
