Langenbrunner announced his retirement Wednesday after 18 NHL seasons.
ANALYSIS
Langenbrunner broke through with the Stars in the 1994-95 campaign and spent parts of nine seasons in Dallas, helping the team to its only Stanley Cup in the 1998-99 season. He would join the Devils for another nine years, winning another Stanley Cup in 2002-03 and submitting a career-best 69 points in 2008-09. He was later named the captain of the U.S. Olympic Team in the 2010 Winter Games. A torn labrum suffered last February kept Langenbrunner out for much of last season and effectively ended the forward's career.

Langenbrunner re-signed with the Blues in the offseason to return to a support role, and is likely slated for third-line duty. Despite what turned out to be a relatively minor role last season, Langenbrunner wore an "A" on his sweater and will likely retain that in 2012-13. He was an important team presence when the Blues transitioned to head coach Ken Hitchcock in early November. Hitchcock said he'd like to give Langenbrunner a bigger role if he re-signed, but it's hard to see what that bigger role might be as the Blues are loaded with young talent in the top six. He posted 24 points last season and we're not seeing much more from the 37-year-old this year.

Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock said he sat Langenbrunner on Opening Night because he wanted "to get a read on three or four young guys" on the roster right now, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Hitchcock added that he'll evaluate the young players "and then probably settle after Game 3 or 4 and obviously Jamie is probably going to be there."
