Ward announced his retirement after 13 NHL seasons, according to the Orange County Register.
ANALYSIS
Ward indicated through the NHL players' union that he underwent a third surgery on his knee after 2009-10 and it was determined that he would not be ready for the start of 2010-11. Ward spent time with five NHL teams during his career and played in 839 games. He tallied 44 goals and 107 assists. He appeared in 95 playoff games, which included 25 for the Hurricanes during their championship season. His goal in Game 7 started the 3-1 victory over Edmonton. He was a member of the Detroit Red Wings squad that won back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1997 and 1998, the last time an NHL team accomplished that feat.

Across the league, there are players who give their respective teams huge boosts even though their efforts don't appear on stat sheets very often. Ward is no exception. When Carolina re-acquired him from Boston in the offseason, they gained a capable body on the penalty kill. Likewise, at 6-foot-2, 215, Ward fits the mold in accordance with GM Jim Rutherford's plans to beef up his defense. Unfortunately, this doesn't add up to much. In fact, his best offensive season was with the 2005-06 Hurricanes when he tallied 25 points (6G, 19A) in 71 games. Since he'll be paired with Pitkanen, we envision about that same level of offense from the blueliner this season, but there should be offensive-minded defensemen to opt for instead.
