Hull, who formally announced his retirement from the NHL at a media conference Saturday night, said he made the difficult decision to retire because he simply felt he was no longer able to live up to his own expectations, reports the Canadian Press.
ANALYSIS
"I wish no one had to do this because it's so hard, it's hard because you never think you're going to grow older and be unable to live up to the expectations you set for yourself," Hull said. "I just thank everyone who ever touched my life in the game." At that point, the 741-goal scorer had to stop to gain control of his emotions. He had one assist in five games with the Coyotes and retired wearing his father's No. 9 jersey which the elder Hull had "un-retired" so his son could wear it this season. Brett finishes his career with 741 goals and 650 assists, two Stanley Cup wins, nine All-Star jerseys, one Hart trophy and one Conn Smythe. Hats off to a great NHLer and a fantastic fantasy performer.

Being retired will significantly limit his fantasy value, but if you have a roster spot you want to have fun with, there is nothing better than drafting a retiree. Maybe he makes a comeback!
The son of the Golden Jet is not what he used to be. If you have a shot to get him deep in your draft, you might want to take a chance, but don't expect him to return to his days of yore, especially since he has less around him than his days with the Wings. In his last year with the Wings, his 18th NHL season, Hull recorded 25-43-68 in 81 games. He did finish second on the Wings in shots with 200, while leading to team in power play goals with 10. He also ranked second on Detroit in assists, tied for second in points, and tied for third in goals. The coaching of Gretzky might give him that added inspiration to bring back a high level of production for one more season, but we're not counting on it.
