The Red Wings did not present Renouf with a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent in June, but the Hurricanes promptly signed the 24-year-old defenseman to a one-year, two-way contract. Unfortunately for Renouf, the ‘Canes also inked deals with two established blueliners -- Dougie Hamilton, Calvin de Haan -- in free agency, so it will probably take an injury or two to one of the regulars for the lefty shooter to see ice time at the highest level. Renouf posted 29 points (five goals, 24 assists) and 183 PIM to supplement a plus-16 rating over 146 games for AHL Grand Rapids before hitting the open market for the first time.
