Scatchard (concussion) has been told by doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix that he must retire or risk further injury to his brain, The Vancouver Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Scatchard had issues with head injuries late in his career, and one that occurred late last season in the AHL finally put his health risk over the edge. He'll finish with 128 goals, 269 points and 1,040 penalty minutes in 659 career games.

Scatchard, 34, was signed to a two-way deal in the offseason by St. Louis and will add to the organization's depth at forward. He's looking to jump-start his NHL career, which was derailed by a concussion and face injury suffered while with Phoenix in the 2006-07 season. He was limited to just 11 AHL games in 2007-08 and was completely out of hockey in 2008-09. After a successful return to the AHL (Milwaukee Admirals) last year, he'll get an opportunity to compete for a spot on the major-league roster in training camp, but appears headed to start the season with Peoria of the AHL. With 668 games of NHL experience behind him, Scatchard will be on the short list of callups when injuries strike the Blues.
Scatchard is a key role player on a Coyote team deep with skaters. His playing time will be limited and his fantasy worth, never high to begin with, is not significant at all.
Scatchard will settle in as the Bruins' third-line center or right winger, but won't produce fantasy points. He's tough on opponents but needs to keep his emotions (and penalty minutes) in check.
