Brashear signed a contract with MODO of the Swedish Hockey League on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The move seemingly comes out of nowhere, as Brashear hasn't played professional hockey since the 2009-10. It appears Brashear's relationship with former Flyers teammate Peter Forsberg, who serves as MODO's assistant GM, might have influenced the club's decision to bring him aboard. The long-time tough guy will be tasked with protecting MODO's stars, which most notably includes Maple Leafs prospect William Nylander, a top-10 pick in last June's NHL Entry Draft.

Brashear offers almost nothing offensively and the Rangers already have a penalty minute magnet in Avery. Brashear will fill an enforcer role on Broadway, but he is not going to see much ice time outside of the checking line. He managed only four points last year for the Caps and he'll make a nice addition as a role player for the Rangers, but not to your fantasy roster - save for leagues that emphasize PIMs. And even those may be curtailed a bit this season.
Brashear is the Caps hard hitting enforcer and is always good for 100 plus penalty minutes a season. The 6-foot-3 bruiser should continue the same role and play on the checking line again this season. He finished last season with a whopping 8 points in 80 games and has no value besides putting up penalty minutes.
The Capitals' resident goon, Brashear will man the left wing on the fourth line and is good for another 160 penalty minutes in 2007-08.
The Caps brought in Brashear in part to provide protection for young superstar Alexander Ovechkin, as other teams started taking potshots at the rookie late last season. Still, this probably doesn't translate to the lumbering Brashear getting much time on Ovechkin's line, but if he can pick up even a few shifts with the Russian while providing his regular share of penalty minutes, he might be one of the more effective goons in the league in 2006-07.
Not just a brawler, but a guy coach Ken Hitchcock feels comfortable playing on any line - Brashear can just as easily find himself on a line with Peter Forsberg as finding himself scratched for the game. It all depends on the matchup. He might be a pleasant 20-point surprise this season, in addition to his normal output of 175-200 PIMs.
