Dwight King

A broken foot derailed the start of King’s campaign last year, and when he returned, King saw his already modest offense dip – just 13 points in 47 contests, and he barely averaged a shot per game. Three seasons ago, King looked like a rising depth-line talent who was more than just a novelty on the team that shares his surname, but fantasy owners in 2016-17 can’t count on him to be more than what he’s been over the last two years: a grinder with fairly little offensive touch who sees nearly zero power-play time.

It was a breakout season for King in his second full season as he netted 15 goals and 15 assists in 77 games. It's hard to imagine he'll top those numbers again, what with the emergence of Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson, and the late season addition of Marion Gaborik. King's opportunity for top-six minutes has all but disappeared. He'll be one of the more valuable bottom-six forwards in the league if he can repeat his breakout performance, but do not overrate his potential.

King helped spark the Kings to the Stanley Cup in their run in 2012, but struggled to get on track for much of the season last year and finished with just 10 points in 47 games. He should enter camp with the inside track on a bottom-six role, but that's likely his upside.

King spent the first half of last season down in the AHL before earning a callup to the Kings in February. He played fairly well (14 points in 27 games) in a fourth-line role and capped off his season with four goals in the Western Conference Finals. He clicked alongside Jarret Stoll in the playoffs and could see most of his time alongside Stoll again in a third-line role. He's never topped more than 24 goals in the AHL so don't expect much more than a dozen or so goals even if his role expands a bit.

King had a breakout season (24 G, 28 A in 72 games) for the Kings' AHL team in Manchester and figures to get a shot and filling a bottom-six role for the Kings in training camp. He's got enough size and checking ability to be an effective third or fourth line player for the Kings with his improving offensive game but may start the season in the AHL again.
