Lessard will spend the entire 2011-12 season playing with Binghamton of the AHL. His role there will be simple: protect his teammates, especially the many youngsters who'll be seeing their first or second year at the pro level. He had 187 penalty minutes in only 36 AHL games last year with the B-Sens and 78 penalty minutes in 24 games with the big club.
Lessard has no fantasy potential and will spend the 2010-11 season playing for the Binghamton Senators. His role will primarily be that of enforcer and he'll rack up a lot of penalty minutes protecting Ottawa's young prospects down on the farm.
Lessard is AHL depth at this point in his career, and with Phoenix changing minor-league affiliates to Las Vegas this summer, that's not a bad thing. He's a plodding, physical defender who will make life hard on AHL forwards, but with the added blue line depth Phoenix added in the summer, Lessard will be a fixture in Sin City for 2009-2010.
Lessard has been the resident tough guy in Atlanta the last few years. He led the team with 181 PIMs in the 2003-04 season and doesn’t provide much other than toughness to the team. He will likely be losing playing time with the new additions of fellow enforcer Eric Boulton as well as defensemen Niclas Havelid, Greg de Vries and Jaroslav Modry.
