2025 Fantasy Outlook
Aside from a month-long absence with a knee injury, Markstrom was everything the Devils needed to become a playoff team. He went 26-16-6 with a 2.50 GAA and a .900 save percentage over 49 regular-season appearances, but injuries to other players led to a first-round exit in the playoffs. Markstrom will be in a contract year in 2025-26, and at 35 years old, he'll need to prove that age is not a problem to set himself up for a new deal, potentially one that will take him to the end of his career. Markstrom is still a strong goalie, though fantasy managers should expect a slight regression in his numbers as well as having a strong backup plan in place, since the Swede carries moderate injury risk. Poised for 2-3 week absence
Markstrom is expected to miss "a couple of weeks" with a lower-body injury according to head coach Sheldon Keefe on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
There was speculation regarding Markstrom's status after the Devils recalled Nico Daws from the minors Wednesday. In three outings this year, including a relief appearance versus Columbus on Monday, the 35-year-old Markstrom has a 2-1-0 record and an .845 save percentage. Without Markstrom in the lineup, Jake Allen (undisclosed) is expected to see the bulk of the workload but could share plenty of starts with Daws. Given the length of his injury absence, Markstrom could be a candidate for injured reserve in the coming days.

Markstrom slips on a Devils jersey on the heels of a season that looked a bit average, at least by traditional stats. He delivered a 23-23-2 record with a 2.78 GAA and .905 save percentage with the Flames, but he did it in front of a team that fell apart, leaving him unprotected most nights. Markstrom's 28.93 GSAx (goals saved above expected) told a different tale. It was third-best in the NHL, behind Connor Hellebuyck and Jordan Binnington. In other words, he was a star and he looks like he'll be a perfect fit in New Jersey's uptempo style. Markstrom is a strong second-tier netminder with great upside in his new home. It was only three seasons ago that he finished second in Vezina voting behind Igor Shesterkin. He won't repeat that in 2024-25, but Markstrom could finish in the top eight and star for your squad.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Dealing with injury?
Markstrom was reportedly slow to get up at the end of Monday's clash with the Jackets, which could explain why the team recalled Nico Daws from the minors, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
As of now, the team hasn't made any official announcement about an injury to Markstrom or backup Jake Allen, but the fact that they brought in Daws from the minors would seem to point to a problem between the pipes. Through three games this season, the 35-year-old Markstrom sports a 2-1-0 record despite a 3.88 GAA. If Markstrom can't play versus the Panthers on Thursday, Allen would likely get the starting nod.
