Dropped from tryout
Neal was released from his professional tryout agreement by Columbus on Monday, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Neal only appeared in 19 contests for St. Louis last season in which he tallied two goals, two assists and 31 shots while logging 11:58 of ice time per game. It's unclear what's next for the 14-year NHL veteran, who could be facing the prospect of hanging up his skates. If this is the end for Neal, he would retire having logged 869 games in which he tallied 296 goals and 263 assists along with 58 points in 110 postseason clashes.

Neal enjoyed an early season surge in 2019-20, racking up 11 goals in 14 games in October. Over his remaining 41 games, he potted just eight goals. The veteran winger finished the year with 31 points in 55 contests -- a noticeable boost from the 19 points in 63 outings from the year before, but a far cry from his prime production. Neal is far from guaranteed a top-six role with the Oilers in 2020-21, which makes it all the more difficult to predict how he'll perform. Fantasy managers should expect him to produce at a 20-goal, 40-point pace in a full season, but he hasn't played 82 games in a campaign since 2015-16 with the Predators. Neal should have a stable floor if he can maintain his hearty power-play usage, which saw him skate 2:53 per game with the man advantage last year.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Unlikely to be bought out
Oilers general manager Ken Holland has stated it's highly unlikely Neal will be bought out this offseason, The Athletic's Daniel Nugent-Bowman reports.
ANALYSIS
Neal still has three years remaining on his five-year, $28.75 million deal, and while buying him out would save Edmonton a little more than $3.8 million against the cap annually over the next three campaigns, it would also cost the Oilers just over $1.9 million against the cap annually over the next six years, a commitment Holland evidently isn't willing to make at this time. The veteran forward is undoubtedly overpaid, but he still picked up 19 goals and 31 points in 55 regular-season contests before adding two goals and a helper in four playoff games, so it's not like he's a complete liability.
