As the last layer of defense for a rebuilding club that cycled through its fair share of rookie defensemen last season, Howard went 23-22-5 and finished without a shutout for the first time in 10 years. To make matters worse, his ratios (3.07 GAA, .909 save percentage) also fell short of league averages. Howard has ample job security with career backup Jonathan Bernier and journeyman Calvin Pickard next in line for starting opportunities, but his allied skaters desperately need to show improvement on special teams. Detroit has failed to boast a top-10 power-play unit since 2014-15, and its putrid 77.1 penalty-killing rate from the most recent campaign made life hard for the American netminder. While he's good for 50-to-60 starts each year, Howard is best utilized as a No. 2 in fantasy hockey, especially with GM-successor Steve Yzerman pleading for patience as he overhauls the 23-man roster.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

				  Likely hitting open market
Howard said Sunday that he "probably won't" continue with the Red Wings next season, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
				  ANALYSIS
The 36-year-old has spent his entire career with the Red Wings, but he's set to hit free agency this offseason as an unrestricted free agent. Howard was roughed up throughout the season in 2019-20, going a measly 2-23-2 along with a 4.20 GAA and .882 save percentage. Despite likely looking elsewhere, Howard brushed off retirement talk, stating: "Someone is going to have to tell me I can't play anymore." Teams around the league will certainly be looking to kick the tires on the veteran; however, it's unclear what sort of market Howard will have after his tough past season.
