Philadelphia called up Backlund and eight others on an emergency basis for the playoffs, the Philadelphia News reports.

None of the players are likely to see the ice for Philadelphia. The others were Ben Holmstrom, Erik Gustafsson, Matt Walker, Kevin Marshall, Zac Rinaldo, Michael Ryan, Mike Testwuide and Eric Wellwood.

Backlund played in the SM-liiga during last year's NHL lockout. He had a respectable 2.25 goals allowed average in 34 games, but hasn't seen any NHL ice time since a lone appearance in the 2009-10 season. With so much goaltender depth in their system, it's unlikely he'll be a relevant option for the Flyers this season. He slated to open the season with Vityaz Podolsk (KHL).
Backlund only managed to start two games last season, one with Adriondack (AHL), the other with Trenton in the ECHL. The goaltender has never seen any NHL ice time and only saw a small share Adirondack’s starts in the 2010-11 season. The odds of Backlund seeing enough starts in the NHL to be relevant in fantasy leagues are low, especially considering the Flyers have Ilya Bryzgalov and Michael Leighton at the NHL level.
Backlund spent roughly the entire 2010-11 campaign in the AHL and looks destined to do so again this season. The Flyers added Ilya Bryzgalov to the roster and still have Sergei Bobrovsky and Michael Leighton under contract, though a trade could clear some room. Even under that circumstance, Backlund would be relegated to a backup role.
Backlund will likely enter the 2010-11 campaign as the Flyers' third netminder unless he's able to make an impression during camp this fall. The 29-year-old posted a 2.79 GAA and a .906 save percentage in 41 games in the AHL last season.
