Signs one-year extension with HIFK
Vesalainen signed a one-year extension with HIFK of the Finnish Liiga on Friday, David Minuk of Illegal Curve reports.
ANALYSIS
Vesalainen was selected in the first round -- 24th overall -- in 2017 and spent parts of three seasons with the Jets from 2018 until 2022. Vesalainen inked a one-year deal in the offseason with Malmo of the Swedish League but went to his native Finland earlier in the season when things did not work out in Malmo. The Jets retained his rights as they tendered him an offer during the summer of 2022. He has nine goals and 17 points in 24 games with HIFK Helsinki after picking up only a goal and two assists in 15 games in Sweden.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2020
2019
2018
Vesalainen didn't appear in any NHL games in 2019-20, but he had a solid 30 points in 60 games with AHL Manitoba. The Finn, a first-round pick from 2017, is too strong of a player to feature in a bottom-six role -- it's a scoring line job or the minors for Vesalainen in 2020-21, as there's little for him to gain on a checking line. A top-six role on the wings likely won't open up unless Patrik Laine or Nikolaj Ehlers gets traded, so the 21-year-old will likely spend another season gaining experience with a significant role in the minors. Dynasty managers will want to keep the power forward stashed on their rosters, as he could make an NHL impact at some point in the next few years.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

May head overseas
Vesalainen is expected to sign in the SHL for next season, Scott Billeck of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Vesalainen has logged just five points in 70 regular-season appearances across parts of three seasons since he was drafted 24th overall by the Jets in 2017. The winger was most recently sent down to AHL Manitoba in March, but it appears he'll try to rediscover his game in Sweden. Given that he's only 22 years old, this may not be the last we see of him in North America.
