Odd lineup hints at trade
Colin Stephenson of Newsday points out that the Rangers' decision to reinsert Hajek into the lineup for the first time since Feb. 1 required the team to dress seven defensemen for the first time this season.
ANALYSIS
New York clearly wasn't dissatisfied with any of its six regular defensemen, and the Rangers had 12 healthy forwards available, so the likeliest explanation for Hajek's insertion is that he was being showcased for a trade. "Libor hasn't played in a while, and he's played good when he was in there,'' coach Gerard Gallant said when asked about the unconventional lineup. "Nobody loves playing seven D, but I think it worked out fine," Gallant added, which certainly makes it sound like there was an ulterior motive to playing Hajek beyond giving the team the best chance to win Sunday in Winnipeg.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2020
2019
Hajek will spend the beginning of the season on loan with HC Kometa Brno in his native Czech Republic, where the Rangers are hoping he'll be able to hone his game after looking overwhelmed in limited NHL action over the past two seasons. Hajek has racked up a goal and five assists in 33 NHL games over that span, and his offense has been alarmingly nonexistent in the AHL as well, where he has just two goals and seven assists in 89 games. He'll turn just 23 in February and still has time to develop into an adequate defense-first blueliner, but Hajek could well be left off the Rangers' roster after returning from his loan and has almost no fantasy upside.
