Ritola cleared unconditional waivers Wednesday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.
ANALYSIS
The Lightning now have the option to release Ritola from his contract so he can pursue playing in Europe. Given that Ritola is against playing in the AHL, that would appear to be the team's next step.

Ritola was restricted to just 31 games with the Bolts last year because of Meniere's disease, a disorder of the inner ear that can affect both hearing and balance. It was at its worst during descents on the team plane and it left him, quite literally, deaf and puking. Hearing aids designed to manage the inner ear pressures seemed to help but it remains to be seen if they'll work over the long term. He's a creative player with nice, soft hands who could really help the Bolts' PK if he's healthy. His fantasy value is minimal, though.
