Mottau announced his retirement from professional hockey Tuesday, Joe Haggerty of CSN New England reports.

ANALYSIS
The Massachusetts native was exploring the option of playing with AHL Providence to stick with his hometown Bruins organization, but decided he was content to spend more time with his family. Mottau, 36, appeared in 321 career NHL games with the Rangers, Flames, Devils, Islanders, Bruins and Panthers, with his most productive seasons coming in the late 2000s with New Jersey.

The veteran blueliner Mottau didn't make an NHL appearance last year, but could be the Panther's seventh defenseman this year. Either way, he doesn't score very much (zero goals at any level since 2010), so he has very little fantasy value.

Mottau, who notched two points in 35 NHL games last season, is still looking for work as a depth blueliner after finishing the 2011-12 season with Boston.

Mottau's first season in an Islander uniform was a short one as he only played 20 games, amassing three assists before needing to undergo hip surgery. Mottau will have a battle on his hands to remain a top-six defenseman this season and could find himself out of a job unless he has a good training camp.

Mottau won't be a factor for the Devils in terms of the team's offense, but he's a steady defender, despite being prone to the occasional mishap. He posted a strong plus-25 rating last year and will see plenty of ice time under Jacques Lemaire, but limited power play time. He's not a reliable offensive source.

Mottau was a pleasant surprise for the Devils last season, but still didn't make much noise in terms of fantasy production. 17 points is middle of the road for New Jersey, but it doesn't warrant consideration for most leagues. He'll see some power play time this coming season, but expect similar numbers to 07-08.

Assigned to Lowell (AHL) after training camp. Mottau has been a disappointment in the NHL after winning the Hobery Baker Award and drawing comparisons to Brian Leetch.
