2026 Fantasy Outlook
Kapanen heads into this season with one year remaining on his contract. He is eligible to be a restricted free agent ahead of 2027-28. The Finnish forward held his own in his first full NHL campaign in 2025-26, collecting 22 goals, 37 points, 131 shots, 68 blocks and a plus-4 rating over 82 regular-season games. Kapanen is only 23 years old and has plenty of room to grow, but his role in the lineup is a question mark after he was a healthy scratch for 12 of 19 games during Montreal's 2026 postseason run. Kapanen also had a 16.8 shooting percentage in 2025-26, which will likely come down this season. That makes the 2021 second-round pick merely a dart throw in the later rounds of deeper formats. ANALYSIS
Kapanen was one of three players who recorded a goal and an assist for the Canadiens, with Alex Newhook and Ivan Demidov being the others. Kapanen continues to show glimpses of his talent and seems to be leaving his March slump in the rearview. The 22-year-old center had just two points (both goals) in nine contests since the beginning of the month and until March 19, but he's bounced back since then with three points over his last four outings. Still, the lack of productivity on a game-to-game basis limits his upside in most formats. With 35 points in 71 games, he remains a low-end fantasy asset despite his top-six role.

Kapanen had a busy 2024-25 regular season, recording 15 goals and 35 points in 36 appearances with Timra of the Swedish Hockey League as well as two assists, 16 shots, one hit and eight blocks across 18 appearances with Montreal. He added another assist in three playoff outings with the Canadiens and then supplied three goals and six points across 11 postseason outings with AHL Laval. Taken with the No. 64 overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, the 22-year-old will compete for a bottom-six spot on Montreal’s Opening Night roster. He might fall short of that goal and instead begin the campaign in the minors, but even if that happens, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Kapanen spend some time at the top level this season. There is some offensive upside here, so keep an eye on his situation.
