Roy was traded along with Ladislav Smid to the Flames on Friday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 reports. The Oilers received center Roman Horak and goaltending prospect Laurent Brossoit.

Roy has been playing this season with AHL Oklahoma City. In four games he is 2-2-0 with a 3.29 GAA and an .897 save percentage. He will provide organizational depth at goalie for the Flames.

Roy continued his development last season as he was promoted to the AHL after starting the season in the ECHL. Roy could be the Oilers' goaltender of the future once Nikolai Khabibulin is gone or -- at the very least -- the backup to Devan Dubnyk if he continues to mature. He is not considered an elite prospect, but he has the talent to be very good.
Roy had a disappointing Junior Hockey Championship but still may be the Oilers heir apparent in net within a few years. As for this season, Roy is third on the Oilers' depth chart behind Nikolai Khabibulin and Devan Dubnyk. An injury to either of those goalies could necessitate a call-up, but Edmonton may prefer to have Roy play every day in the minors rather than having him waste away on the bench in the majors.
Roy could be the Oilers answer in net in a few years. He should split the starting duties with Martin Gerber for Springfield of the AHL this season, and will probably need another season beyond that before he is ready for the NHL.
