2025 Fantasy Outlook
Copley is unlikely to begin 2025-26 in the NHL after the Kings signed Anton Forsberg in the offseason to be the backup to Darcy Kuemper. Copley made only one NHL appearance in 2024-25, and he went 24-17-1 with a 2.49 GAA and a .904 save percentage over 41 regular-season games with AHL Ontario. Copley figures to be the first goalie called up if injuries take Kuemper or Forsberg out of the lineup, as he has enough NHL experience to hold down a backup role for an extended stretch of time if necessary. Acquired for considerations
Copley was traded to the Kings from the Lightning for future considerations Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Copley was picked up off waivers by the Lightning on Oct. 2 when there were some questions regarding the health of Andrei Vasilevskiy. With their starter good to go, the Bolts no longer needed Copley and opted to trade him back to the Kings rather than sticking him back on waivers. Now back with LA, Copley will provide some extra depth while Darcy Kuemper (lower body) is dealing with an injury of his own.

The plan was not to have Copley play in 37 contests with LA last season, but the combined struggles of Jonathan Quick and Cal Petersen resulted in the Kings turning to Copley, who posted a 24-6-3 record, a 2.64 GAA and a .903 save percentage. Although he was good enough to at least stabilize LA's goaltending situation, the 31-year-old with 68 career NHL games under his belt is far from an ideal starting option. Still, with the Kings' main alternative being the aging Cam Talbot, who is coming off a rough campaign with Ottawa, Copley might end up with around half the starts. The Kings are good enough that he's likely to win 20-25 games under those circumstances, even if Copley once again finishes with a mediocre save percentage.
