Whitney announced his retirement from the NHL on Wednesday, ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitney spent 23 years in the NHL, with many of his most effective seasons coming in the twilight of his career. He tallied a career-best 83 points with the Hurricanes in 2006-07 and registered 77 points in 2011-12 with the Coyotes, when he was 39 years old. All told, he supplied 1,064 points over 1,330 regular season games spent with the Sharks, Oilers, Panthers, Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Hurricanes, Coyotes, and Stars.

Whitney continued his late-career renaissance with yet another solid season last year, picking up 11 goals and 29 points in just 32 games, as he was limited with a foot injury. Skating alongside Jamie Benn, Whitney is now expected to be joined on the top line by Tyler Seguin and should continue to post excellent numbers, even at age 41.
