Lengthy scoring droughts should come as no surprise for a player stuck in a fourth-line role on one of the league's weakest teams. Carpenter has done well to generate 11 points with 42 shots on net, 35 hits, 24 blocked shots and a minus-5 rating through 44 outings this season, but that's not enough production to warrant a roster spot in fantasy.

Carpenter has carved out an NHL role with a high-energy approach. Last year, that translated to 15 points and 117 hits in 69 games for the Blackhawks. He's versatile enough to play any of the three forward positions in a bottom-six capacity, and he should be able to skate at least 14 minutes per game for a Blackhawks team that's in store for a rough year. While the scoring numbers are unlikely to pop off the page, in the deepest formats, Carpenter's physicality and shorthanded scoring could be a benefit. Most fantasy managers can leave him off their roster, however.
