Benson continued his strong play for AHL Bakersfield with nine goals and 36 points in 47 contests last year. He also got into seven NHL games, recording one assist. Heading into 2020-21, it's likely Benson starts the year in the minors. The Oilers are fairly set with their left wingers, and he would have to outplay Josh Archibald or Alex Chiasson to get regular playing time. Benson should be near the top of the list for call-ups if injuries arise among the forward group, but he's likely a year or two away from a full-time gig with the parent club.
Benson, a hometown kid from Edmonton, finished his first pro season with 66 points in 68 games with AHL Bakersfield and appears ready to challenge for an NHL spot in 2019-20. As the Oilers look to get younger (and cheaper), Benson could wind up taking the spot of an older, pricier veteran this upcoming season after such a stellar campaign in the minors. Expect him to try and make an impact at the team's training camp, and if he winds up playing alongside one of Edmonton's superstars -- Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl -- Benson could surprise in 2019-20.
