Sexsmith has been recalled from AHL Worcester to serve as Thomas Greiss' backup for Thursday's game versus Dallas, David Pollack of the San Jose Mercury News reports.

This will be a temporary stay for Sexsmith and he should be sent down as soon as Antti Niemi is healthy. Niemi is day-to-day after being dinged up in practice, although it appears to be nothing serious and he could be back shortly.

Sexsmith will be in tough this season to earn an AHL job with the Sharks' affiliate and could find himself once again toiling in the ECHL. He's calm and poised, but he has to beat out Harri Sateri for the right to back up Alex Stalock. Regardless, Sexsmith's fantasy value is along way away.

Sexsmith is a goalie prospect for the Sharks still waiting for a shot in the NHL. He was San Jose’s third-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, but split last season between the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL (.899 save percentage/2.74 goals-against average) and AHL Worcester (.902/2.94). Barring a rash of injuries to the Sharks’ more experienced goalies, Sexsmith is likely to remain in the lower ranks for the 2011-12 season.

After largely dominating the WHL with the Vancouver Giants (never posting higher than a 2.30 goals-against average) in four seasons, Sexmith had a reality check in his first year as a pro with the Worcester Sharks. In 13 games, Sexsmith was 4-6-1 with an ugly 3.94 GAA and .860 save percentage. Obviously he has some work to do in the AHL, but Sexsmith remains one of the top goalie prospects in the Sharks' system.

The past three seasons, Sexsmith has had a significant role stopping pucks for the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League. In that timeframe he recorded 113 wins, including 25 shootouts. Since he’s a noteworthy prospect, keep an eye on him ahead of time, but know that he might not be sent to the big leagues for a few more years.

Keep a close eye on the 19-year-old Sexsmith. The Sharks are set at goalie for the time being, but Sexsmith showed his immense potential after posting a 1.89 GAA with nine shutouts for WHL's Vancouver Giants. He is still a few years away from the NHL, but his name should be popular in fantasy leagues when he arrives.
