Afanasyev went back to Russia in 2024-25, logging just 21 points in 53 appearances with CSKA Moscow of the KHL. His NHL rights remained with the Sharks, and he got under contract for 2025-26 by signing an $800,000 contract this spring. Afanasyev is far from guaranteed to make the NHL roster after an uninspiring season in Russia. He has just one goal in 19 NHL appearances, all with the Predators, but he also produced 113 points over 187 career AHL games with Milwaukee when he was a Nashville prospect, which shows some scoring upside if he gets a look with the Sharks.
