Choo agreed Monday with the Wyverns on a one-year, $2.4 million contract, San Kang of The Dong-A Ilbo reports.
ANALYSIS
Coming off an injury-plagued 2020 campaign with MLB's Texas Rangers in which he finished with a wRC+ under 100 for the first time since 2017, Choo failed to receive an appealing contract offer from North America clubs upon hitting free agency this winter. As a result, the 38-year-old South Korean has opted to return to his home country in what could be the swan song of an impressive career. After signing with the Seattle Mariners in 2000 as an undrafted free agent, Choo reached the big leagues for the first time in 2005 and carved out a productive 16-year run in MLB with four different organizations. Over that span, he slashed a collective .275/.377/.447 with 218 home runs and 157 stolen bases in 1,652 career games. Despite his advanced age, Choo's big payday -- the largest single-season salary in KBO history, according to Jeeho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency -- should guarantee him a regular spot atop the Wyverns' lineup.
