The Giants made an unusual choice when they signed Machado, opting to fill their foreign hitter slot with a defensive specialist rather than the typical defensively limited slugger. He held his own at the plate, with his .279/.357/.392 slash line over two seasons making him a useful player given his value in the field, but the Giants will evidently be looking in a different direction going forward.
