Fence grabs lead to draw
BantamweightUFC
September 18, 2021
Alateng and Gustavo Lopez fought to a unanimous draw (28-28, 28-28, 28-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Alateng has no one to blame for the draw but himself. On the heels of a back-and-forth first couple rounds, Alateng repeatedly grabbed the fence on multiple occasions in Round 3, leading referee Keith Peterson to (correctly) dock him a point. It ended up being the difference in a bout in which neither man was able to separate from the other from any significant length of time. Alateng has been up and down over his first four UFC bouts, picking up a couple wins, a loss and this draw. He seems likely to hover right around the .500 mark moving forward.

Taking on Lopez in September
BantamweightUFC
July 21, 2021
Alateng will take on Gustavo Lopez in a bantamweight bout at the UFC event Sept. 18, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
Alateng will be hoping to rebound following a unanimous decision loss to Casey Kenney back in October of 2020. That came after starting 2-0 during his time in the UFC. Lopez will be coming back after getting knocked out in his last fight back in March.
Shows heart in decision loss
BantamweightUFC
October 3, 2020
Alateng lost to Casey Kenney via unanimous decision (25-30, 26-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
ANALYSIS
Alateng barely made it out of the first round, as Kenney continued to walk him down with constant pressure. It was the body kicks that seemingly did the most damage as Kenney mounted a massive lead in the significant strike total. Alateng landed a few times, but his shots were few and far between. The second round was more of the same, as Alateng landed a big left hand about 90 seconds in, but every single shot he threw was met with extended combos from Kenney. By the end of the frame, the damage to Alateng's body was visible, as he looked like a man who had taken nearly 30 kicks to the body over the first two rounds. Alateng seemed sapped entering Round 3. it was as if his game plan was to wait and hopefully land one big counter, knowing he was well behind on the scorecards. The heart here was tremendous as he continued to shrug off body shots, but he's likely to pay for it in damage to his right arm and ribs that could sideline him a while. The puzzling thing here is that Alateng never went to his wrestling to try and change up the rhythm of the fight. It's a skill he has, considering he accumulated seven takedowns in his first two UFC bouts, but he instead opted to go the fan-friendly, strike-heavy approach. We'll see if he goes back to the drawing board after this one.

Expected for UFC 253
BantamweightUFC
July 19, 2020
Alateng (foot) is expected to take on Casey Kenney in a bantamweight matchup at UFC 253 on Sept. 19, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Chinese-born fighter will come into the fight on a four-fight winning streak, including a perfect 2-0 record in the UFC. Alateng was facing a potential medical suspenssion due to a right foot injury in his win over Ryan Benoit, but as evidenced by this news, he's expected to be cleared ahead of the bout. Alateng will be at a two-inch height disadvantage against Kenney, who has gone 3-1 in his UFC career.
Needs X-rays on foot
BantamweightUFC
December 26, 2019
Alateng is facing a potential 180-day medical suspension due to a right foot injury suffered in his victory over Ryan Benoit at UFC Busan, Alexander K. Lee of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alateng will be forced to sit out a mandatory 30 days (21 days no contact), but if he wants to book a fight before the summer of 2020, he'll need to have X-rays done on his foot to prove there wasn't a serious injury. Benoit did not come away unscathed either, as he faces the same set of circumstances due to a right thumb injury.
