Halsey suffered a KO defeat (Body Kick) to Rafael Carvalho in a middleweight title bout at 1:42 of Round 2 at Bellator 144 on Friday in Uncasville, Connecticut.
ANALYSIS
Finished by a precise liver kick from Carvalho, Halsey suffered his first defeat in MMA competition. While he would almost certainly be granted a re-match, Halsey has long been rumored to move up to light heavyweight -- a division loaded with far more interesting match-ups than middleweight. While this loss will slow Halsey's progress in Bellator, he remains one of the more polished fighters on the roster.

Halsey will enter his Middleweight Championship bout with Rafael Carvalho as a -905 favorite at Bellator 144 on Friday in Uncasville, Connecticut.
ANALYSIS
In a main card rife with mismatches, Halsey will look to claim the vacant Middleweight Championship as a nine-to-one favorite over Rafael Carvalho. The undefeated Halsey was stripped of the belt after failing to make weight for his Bellator 137 title fight with Kendall Grove. A former Division 1 wrestler, Halsey's got the whole package -- the only question seems to be whether he's best served staying at middleweight (where he reportedly has to cut 50 pounds before weighing in) or moving up to light heavyweight.

Halsey defeated Kendall Grove by TKO at 2:25 of Round 4 at Bellator 137 on Friday. Yet due to Halsey missing weight yesterday, the middleweight title will be vacated.
ANALYSIS
Halsey has the body of a Greek god. He is one of the strongest guys in all of MMA and Grove had absolutely nothing for him. Halsey nearly finished the fight on numerous occasions before it was finally stopped. That's the good news. The bad news is that despite the impressive effort, Halsey will still be stripped of his middleweight title because he missed weight prior to the bout. He stated on Twitter yesterday that he had to cut 50 pounds to attempt reach the middleweight limit of 185 pounds. If that's the case, he would be better off fighting at light heavyweight as opposed to middleweight. He has the look of a potential dominant champion for Bellator if he can get the weight cutting under control.

Due to Halsey missing weight for Friday's scheduled Bellator 137 middleweight title fight against Kendall Grove, the title will be vacated should Halsey win on Friday, Ariel Helwani reports.
ANALYSIS
So one way or another, Halsey is going to lose the Bellator middleweight championship. Nothing changes for Grove. It remains a 5-round fight and he will be awarded the title should he win. Halsey weighed in 188.1 pounds, 3.1 pounds over the middleweight title fight limit. He was a gigantic favorite (-800) according to the Vegas odds before he missed weight. It's pretty much a worse case scenario for Bellator.
