Brandon Thatch: Poor grappling game ensures loss Saturday night
Thatch lost to Siyar Bahadurzada via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 4:11 of Round 3 at UFC 196 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It's called mixed martial arts for a reason. Thatch continues to show solid striking skills, but he has shown no improvement in his grappling game and it cost him this fight. Knowing full well that Siyar was planning on taking him down and riding out a decision, Thatch could do nothing about it. To make matters worse, he badly gassed out and eventually tapped out. Every single opponent that Thatch faces is going to make him prove that his grappling game has improved and if it hasn't, he isn't going to be able to defeat anyone of note. You simply can't have such a massive hole in your game and expect to beat better fights.

Brandon Thatch: Submitted By Gunnar Nelson At UFC 189
Thatch lost to Gunnar Nelson via submission (rear naked choke) at 2:54 of Round 1 at UFC 189 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
What a dreadful performance. Thatch landed a few leg kicks from distance early on, but that was about it. He was dropped by a quick combination from Nelson and it only got worse from there. Everyone thought Thatch would be in trouble if Nelson got him to the mat, but not many people thought that Nelson would be able to pull it off. That's back-to-back losses for Thatch. He still has potential, but he's already 30-years old and his stock has dropped significantly over the past six months.

Thatch will be the favorite for Saturday's welterweight fight against Gunnar Nelson at UFC 189 in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Thatch is taller and a far better striker, and that's evident in the odds. He is coming off a loss to Benson Henderson in his last bout in February, but he was actually looking good in that fight before he faltered as the fight progressed. Nelson is nowhere near the fighter that Henderson is and Thatch should be able to use his striking skills and size to avoid Nelson's takedown attempts and then eat him up on the feet.

Brandon Thatch: Replaces John Hathaway, Will Fight Gunnar Nelson At UFC 189
Thatch has agreed to replaced the injured John Hathaway (undisclosed) and fight Gunnar Nelson at UFC 189 on July 11 in Las Vegas, UFC.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thatch was scheduled to face John Howard in a preliminary bout on the same card, but he quickly jumped at the chance to replace Hathaway on the main card portion of the event. Thatch got his first main event assignment in his last bout, a submission loss to Benson Henderson in February.
