Brett McDermott
The Spartan
Gets stopped by Liam McGeary in Belfast
McDermott lost to Liam McGeary via TKO (doctor stoppage) at 1:06 of Round 2 at Bellator 173 in Belfast on Friday.
ANALYSIS
McDermott took this fight just weeks after officially retiring, as Bellator could not afford to have its main event cancelled two weeks in a row as a result of late pullouts. The 39-year-old actually acquitted himself well in the first round, dropping McGeary with a straight right hand, but the former champion went to work thereafter, roughing his opponent up with jabs and kicks. McDermott's brawling style is probably the reason he was given the call on such short notice, but it was unlikely that he would be able to survive an extended fight with McGeary with just three days to prepare. If McDermott decides to hang up the gloves once again, he will leave MMA having compiled a 7-5 professional record dating back to 2013.
