Jason Saggo

Hammered by Gilbert Burns in Pittsburgh
LightweightUFC
September 16, 2017
Saggo lost to Gilbert Burns via KO (punch) at 4:55 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Make it back-to-back dreadful performances from Saggo. A BJJ black belt that has eight career submission wins under his belt, Saggo has proven time and time again that he is a legitimate threat on the mat, but he is a below average athlete and his striking has never evolved. You simply will not succeed in the best organization in the world as a one-dimensional threat. Now sporting a career .500 record (3-3) with the UFC, there is no reason to be excited about the 31-year-old Canadian moving forward.

Not competitive in loss to Rustam Khabilov Saturday
LightweightUFC
December 10, 2016
Saggo lost to Rustam Khabilov via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC 206 on Saturday in Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Saggo landed a nice power shot or two early, but he was vastly overmatched from then on. Terrified about the constant threat of the takedown from Khabilov, Saggo was unable to let his hands go. Saggo is a below-averge athlete and that just isn't going to work against an opponent with the natural ability of Khabilov. Saggo is 3-2 during his run in the UFC, which is considerably better than most expected when he first entered the company, but his ceiling is limited.

Saggo defeated Leandro Silva via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Ottawa.
ANALYSIS
In a fight that was close in just about every area, Saggo won the significant strike battle by a count of 48-47. Saggo was the more active fighter of the two, something that undoubtedly helped earn him the win. Saggo is now 3-1 in the UFC with his only loss being a unanimous decision setback against the talented Paul Felder in October 2014. Saggo is a talented submission specialist, but he is pretty limited on the feet and he doesn't have much power. His brief UFC run to this point has gone better than anyone could have expected, but there are certainly reasons to believe that Saggo may struggle if he is tasked with facing better competition.
Jason Saggo: Easily handles Justin Salas in Vegas
LightweightUFC
March 5, 2016
Saggo defeated Justin Salas via TKO (punches) at 4:31 of Round 1 at UFC 196 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
In three UFC bouts, Saggo now has two first-round stoppage wins and a close split decision loss to the very talented Paul Felder. Saggo doesn't have an advanced stand up game, but he is an elite grappler and he can finish fights with strikes if he is able to set up his opponent with his ground skills. He did just that on Saturday. The 30-year-old Saggo's ceiling will likely be limited by his age, but there's no reason to think he can't continue on a nice roll for the considerable future.
