Struggles continue in Vegas
BantamweightUFC
April 29, 2023
Newson lost to Marcus McGhee via submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:03 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Newson is going to get something of a pass here due to the fact he agreed to fight McGhee on just days notice following the withdrawal of Brian Kelleher (undisclosed), but the result here is highly disappointing regardless. The two men fought to fairly even terms in Round 1 before Newson was dropped with a left hand and quickly choked out about midway through Round 2. Journey appeared to have no real interest in fighting the submission attempt, as he tapped out almost immediately. A loser of back-to-back bouts and with just a single victory in his last six fights (1-4, 1NC) dating back to June 2019, Newson's roster spot in far from secure.

New opponent scheduled
BantamweightUFC
April 26, 2023
Newson will fight Marcus McGhee in a 140-pound catchweight bout at UFC Vegas 72 on Saturday, according to Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Newson's initial opponent was Brian Kelleher, but he had to withdraw from UFC Vegas 72 with an undisclosed problem, likely some form of injury. So now, the 34-year-old's new opponent is a 6-1 fighter but also someone fighting on three days' notice.
Next fight scheduled for April

February 1, 2023
Newson is will face Brian Kelleher in a bantamweight bout at UFC Fight Night on April 29, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Newson last fought in December, losing to Sergey Morozov via unanimous decision. Overall, Newson owns an 8-4 MMA record and is 1-3 (1NC) in UFC Fights. Newson struggles to stay off the mat and will have to perform better in his next fight if he wants to win. He possesses a four-inch reach advantage over his opponent Brian Kelleher, something he'll look to make the most of in their bout.
Drops opener in Vegas
BantamweightUFC
December 17, 2022
Newson lost to Sergey Morozov via unanimous decision (27-30, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Newson was competitive in Round 1 and very well may have won the frame, but it was all downhill from there. Journey's ultimate downfall was his inability to stay off of his back. He allowed Morozov to land six successful takedowns, two in each round. Any opponent that fights Newson moving forward is going to attempt to pressure the heck out of him and force him to the mat. It's a massive hole in his game. The 33-year-old Oregon native drops to 1-3 (1NC) in his first five UFC bouts.
Taking on Morozov in December
BantamweightUFC
August 24, 2022
Newson is in line to take on Sergey Morozov in a bantamweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for Dec. 17, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Newson collected his first UFC victory in four tries back in May, when he defeated Fernie Garcia via unanimous decision. He'll now look to prove he has staying power against Morozov, who is 2-2 so far with the company and comping off a decision victory of his own. The striking numbers match up similarly, but Morozov has more offensive wrestling volume -- a concern considering Newson has yet to defend a takedown in the UFC. The two match up nearly identically in height, reach and age.
Wins following long layoff
BantamweightUFC
May 7, 2022
Newson defeated Fernie Garcia via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) at UFC 274 on Saturday in Phoenix.
ANALYSIS
It was a strong showing from Newson in his first fight since September 2020. Facing an opponent making his UFC debut, Journey stuck to the game plan and varied his offensive attacks. He landed 63 total strikes compared to just 38 from Garcia, while also connecting on 2-of-3 takedown attempts. The competition level Newson was going up against must be taken into consideration, but this was a strong effort given the long layoff. It's Journey's first victory with the UFC, as he entered with a 0-2 (1NC) mark in his first three bouts. The win ensures he will get another opportunity with the company.
