Paddy Holohan
The Hooligan
Holohan announced his retirement from mixed martial arts Monday, according to an official statement from the UFC.
ANALYSIS
This retirement story may still be overshadowed by the proposed early retirement of a fellow Irishman, but it's noteworthy news nonetheless. Holohan has five UFC fights under his belt, but the diagnosis of a rare blood disorder will effectively end his MMA career. This disorder poses a risk to his longevity in the sport, as it has to do with blood clotting, which could become highly problematic if Holohan were to find himself cut in the octagon. With a premature end to "The Hooligan's" career, UFC brass will have to schedule a new opponent for Willie Gates on May 8.

Paddy Holohan: Suffers submission loss to Louis Smolka in front of hometown crowd
Holohan lost to Louis Smolka via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:09 of Round 2 in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Dublin.
ANALYSIS
Holohan badly wanted to come through in front of the hometown fans, but it just wasn't meant to be. Paddy looked great early, racking up several takedowns and control the pace of the fight on the mat. The second round was a different story. Smolka got the far better of the striking exchanges. Holohan awkwardly flopped to his back after an exchange along the fence, perhaps due to exhaustion, and that opened the door for the sequence that led to Smolka sinking in the fight-ending rear-naked choke. Holohan seems destined to be one of those guys who is always involved in fun fights, but never makes waves as far as the rankings go.

Paddy Holohan: Decisions Vaughan Lee In Scotland Saturday
Holohan defeated Vaughan Lee via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Glasgow, Scotland.
ANALYSIS
Holohan stayed active off of his back and did a nice job on the feet in this one. He doesn't excel in any one area, but he's a pretty complete all-around fighter. His ground game has certainly improved and he doesn't appear to have lost any strength since moving down to flyweight last year. He's now 3-1 in the UFC and all four bouts have come within the last 12 months.
