Cote had a three-fight winning streak snapped in his last fight against Donald Cerrone in June of 2016. The 37-year-old Canadian has a nice matchup here against Alves. Alves has shown a questionable chin of late and Cote excels in putting together combinations.

Cote lost to Donald Cerrone via TKO (punches) at 2:35 of Round 3 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Ottawa.
ANALYSIS
Cote was the much bigger fighter, as expected, but everyone apparently forgot that he isn't half the fighter that Cerrone is. Cote took a beating from the opening bell, absorbing a countless amount of leg kicks and getting knocked down on no less than three separate occasions. He had particular problems defending Cowboy's left hook, which repeatedly landed with authority. He also landed virtually no noticeable offensive strikes in the bout. Cote is 6-2 in his last eight fights dating back to November 2012, but at age-36, the days of Cote being able to beat the best fighters in the world are over.

He has flown largely under the radar for the past five and a half years, but Cote is 6-1 in his last seven fights and his only loss during that span came against Stephen Thompson. It’s a rarely been pretty from Cote (a trait that he has displayed for virtually his entire career), but he is coming off back-to-back TKO victories over two tough customers in Josh Burkman and Ben Saunders. An argument can certainly be made that at age 36, Cote is fighting better than any point in his entire career. His aggressive striking style seems like a poor matchup against an opponent who throws as many kicks as Cerrone does, so it’s understandable why Cote is a decent-sized underdog here, but the fact that Cote is in a co-main event halfway through 2016 is a newsworthy event in itself.

Cote appeared to pull off a 10-9 victory in Round 1 after nearly submitting Saunders via armbar, but it was his striking that ultimately won him the battle. He came out with several devastating combinations in Round 2, doing significant damage with uppercuts from the clinch. Saunders eventually dropped to the mat, where Cote was able to finish the job with hammer fists. Cote improves his professional record to 23-9 with one of the most impressive performances of the veteran's career.

What a war between two of the veterans of the sport. Both men had their moments and both men landed a ton of monster shots. Cote's chin is the only reason that he lasted as long as he did. With the crowd behind him, Cote managed to dig deep and landed one gigantic right hand that led to the finish. He is already 35-years old, but with five wins in his last six fights, Cote seems to be getting better with age. He called out Hector Lombard after the fight, which seems like a terrible idea, but that won't take the shine off of what was a terrific bout.
