Takanori Gomi

The Fireball Kid
Released after losing five straight
LightweightOther
November 16, 2017
Gomi was released from the UFC roster along with four other fighters, Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gomi was lost his last five appearance in the Octagon, all via first-round stoppage. The former PRIDE champion hasn't seen much success in the past decade, having gone 4-9-1 dating back to 2007. The Japanese fighter was impressive at the beginning of his career with the promotion and boasted an impressive 10-fight winning streak at one point. He leaves the UFC with a 35-14, 1NC record. Other fighters that faced a similar fate include Hacran Dias, Henrique da Silva, Andriano Martins and Carlos Felipe.

Loses quickly via TKO at Saitama Super Arena in Japan
LightweightOther
September 22, 2017
Gomi was defeated by Dong Hyun Kim via TKO (punches) at 1:30 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Friday in Japan.
ANALYSIS
This one didn't last long. Gomi was caught early with a right hand and Kim followed it up with strikes. The Japanese legend's chin was not up to the task, and this could be his last fight in the UFC.
Release near certainty after fourth straight loss
LightweightOther
June 17, 2017
Gomi lost to Jon Tuck via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:12 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Kallang, Singapore.
ANALYSIS
Gomi is a legend of the sport, but there is no way that the UFC can continue to keep running him out there. He hasn't been competitive for nearly five years. Gomi has lost four fights in a row and has just one win dating back to November 2012. More concerning than the losses is the fact that the 38-year-old has been stopped in all of his recent setbacks. This entire situation is very straightforward. It's time for Gomi to hang up his gloves.
Looking at retirement after lopsided loss to Jim Miller
LightweightOther
July 9, 2016
Gomi lost to Jim Miller via TKO (punches) at 2:18 of Round 1 at UFC 200 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
That should do it for Gomi. He landed one total strike in a fight that couldn't have been any more lopsided if he tried. Miller's tank is also running on empty, but he has more gas left than Gomi, who looks totally finished. The Fireball Kid is now 37 years of age and he has one win in the last three and a half years. The former SHOOTO Champion and Pride veteran may very well be a future Hall of Famer, but it's quite clear that he is finished. If Gomi isn't willing to step aside voluntarily, expect UFC President Dana White to intervene.
Takanori Gomi: Poor Effort Against Joe Lauzon Saturday
LightweightOther
July 25, 2015
Gomi lost to Joe Lauzon via TKO at 2:37 of Round 1 at UFC on FOX 16 on Saturday in Chicago.
ANALYSIS
In his 47th professional fight, Gomi looked just about finished. He wasn't doing much on the feet early and as expected, he struggled when the fight went to the ground. The 36-year-old Gomi has taken a lot of damage over the years and he just isn't the same fighter that won the Pride Grand Prix Championship back in 2005. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him hang up his gloves at this point.
Takanori Gomi: Underdog For Saturday's Fight Against Joe Lauzon
LightweightOther
July 20, 2015
Gomi will be the underdog against Joe Lauzon for Saturday's lightweight fight at UFC on FOX 16 in Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Gomi is coming off a brutal knockout loss to Myles Jury in September in his native Japan. He is only 4-4 in his last eight fights. His best chance of winning on Saturday would seem to be to lure Lauzon into a boxing match for an extended period of time. "The Fireball Kid" is now 36-years old, but he still retains his trademark one-punch knockout power. It wouldn't be a shock to seem him hang up his gloves if he puts forth another poor effort on Saturday.
