Runner-up Finish at Homestead
XFINITY Series
November 18, 2017
Hornish Jr. finished second in the Ford EcoBoost 300 Xfinity Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway Saturday afternoon.
ANALYSIS
Hornish was making a spot start for Penske in the No. 22 Ford, and he did a tremendous job. He wasn't a part of the championship battle, but the veteran was thrust among that drama at the front of the pack most of the race. The final 104-lap green-flag run to the finish would see Hornish consolidate his hold on a Top-5 spot and grab the runner-up finish at the checkered flag. It was his third Top-5 finish in just six starts this season.

Hasn't raced in NASCAR since 2017, and is largely inactive at this point.
Keselowski and Logano will be expected to make the maximum of seven starts each behind the wheel of the No. 22 Ford. Aside from that all-star duo we should see a steady diet of Blaney, Sam Hornish Jr. and possibly even Austin Cindric. This team amassed a four-combined victories among this same driver rotation last season. That speaks to the incredible speed, team strength and resources available at Penske. Given the team’s all-star driving lineup, and unquestionable strength and expertise, the No. 22 Ford team should be among the top multi-driver teams in the Xfinity Series again in 2018. Hornish made six starts for Penske in 2017, collecting one win and three Top-10 finishes.
Hornish is a free agent driver in 2016.
Hornish will return and challenge for the Nationwide Series championship again this season. The Penske veteran was quite consistent in 2012 with 22 Top-10 finishes and an average finish of 9.7 that was among the best in the series. However, Hornish was held out of victory lane despite all his consistency. The No. 12 Ford team will refocus under new leadership in the upcoming season. Gone is crew chief Chad Walter, and in his place atop the war wagon is veteran chief Greg Erwin. Erwin has Sprint Cup Series victories and Chase appearances in his resume with Roush driver Greg Biffle. The knowledge and experience he brings to the table should help the No. 12 team and Hornish, but it will take the prerequisite time period for the two develop some chemistry.
