Mario Gotze Injury: Eyeing return Sunday

Gotze (strain) rejoined training Tuesday and is now eyeing a return when facing Union Berlin on Sunday, according to manager Dino Toppmoller. "Mario has rejoined the team this week. Yesterday and today, he took part in the training sessions, but he won't play a role tomorrow yet. We hope that he can return to the squad on Sunday."

Gotze won't make the UCL opener Thursday, but is in line for a possible return this week, as he does have a chance of making the team sheet Sunday after training this week. This is good news for the club, as they will be gaining back some depth and veteran presence in the midfield. He started in 18 of his 24 appearances last season while recording three goals and two assists, although he will likely see a bench spot to begin if fit.
