Van Dijk missed Monday's friendly with Athletic Club via illness, per manager Arne Slot. "Unfortunately, Virgil is sick today. We miss out on Alisson. [Joe] Gomez is not there, [Conor] Bradley is not there."

Van Dijk missed the friendly, but is expected to be back in time for the community shield and Premier League opener. The defender is crucial to the starting XI and will be a frequent figure in the first team whenever fit.
