Lucie Safarova
38-Year-Old
Calls end to career
Safarova officially announced her retirement from professional tennis Wednesday following her and partner Dominika Cibulkova's first-round doubles loss (6-4, 6-0) to Sofia Kenin and Andrea Petkovic, WTATennis.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old previously hinted in November that her career would come to an end at some point in 2019 and ultimately decided to hang up her racket at Roland-Garros after some minor injuries prevented a proper sendoff earlier in the schedule. The French Open was the site of one of the crowning achievements of her singles career, as the former World No. 5 finished as a runner-up to Serena Wiliams in 2015. Safarova enjoyed more success in doubles play, peaking at a No. 1 ranking and claiming five Grand Slam crowns, including two in Paris.
