40-Year-Old
Ends comeback attempt
June 13, 2018
Bartoli announced Tuesday via her personal Twitter account that she would end her attempted return to professional competitive tennis, citing recurring pain in her shoulder.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old Bartoli, best known for winning the Wimbledon singles title in 2013, amassed more than $11 million in career earnings and peaked at a No. 7 world ranking in January 2012. Shortly after claiming her lone Grand Slam victory, Bartoli announced her retirement from the sport, but rumors of potential comeback efforts have swirled around her over the last few years. Bartoli confirmed in December that she would return to the professional ranks, but she played just one match in March in the Tie Break Tens before health concerns prompted her to step away from the game. The Frenchwoman intends to turn her focus to coaching after racking up 490 wins during her singles career and 117 victories as a doubles player.
