Mystics coach Mike Thibault implied Sunday that he does not expect Delle Donne to play in 2020, the Washington Times reports. "If I were in your shoes, I would go with the assumption that Elena's not playing this year. That's the assumption I have," Thibault told reporters.
ANALYSIS
In what's become a high-profile story, Delle Donne, who has Lyme disease, was denied a medical exemption by the WNBA. As such, if she chooses to opt out of the season, Delle Donne would forego her salary for the 22-game season. However, the Mystics have not removed the reigning league MVP from their roster, so for the time being, she'll be paid, and the door will be left open for Delle Donne to join the team in Florida at a later date. Even so, Thibault does not expect Delle Donne, who underwent back surgery in the offseason, to be on the floor anytime soon. "There is no assumption by us that she will play this summer," Thibault reiterated. "She has a meeting with her surgeon, but basically it's with our rehab people that the constant communication is with them and with Elena. So we do a daily report on all of our players, and she's a part of that report."
