Are the Mets in Trouble?

Every year when I'm preparing for my NL-only team I create a spreadsheet that has at least every player on the 40-man rosters (plus many more), and I painstakingly go through all of the Rotowire notes to create my own little notes for each player. If a player is injured, he's highlighted in yellow. At this point of the offseason, players are sorted by team, so all of the Mets are together.

There's a lot of yellow there.

News today includes Moises Alou out at least 4-6 weeks with a hernia, Carlos Beltran unable to run, and Ryan Church still not all the way back from his concussion of a few days ago. That's the starting outfield.

Carlos Delgado and Luis Castillo and many of the key backups are also hurt. At least the pitching - save for El Duque and Duaner Sanchez - is relatively healthy.

This has the makings of a disaster. I have no love for the Mets, but is anyone in Mets nation panicking yet?

Check the back page of today's New York Daily News to see if Mets Nation is panicking.

Not for nothing, Omar Minaya was asking for this problem by signing so many geriatric-types. I'm just waiting for him to replace Delgado with Julio Franco.

I don't have the N.Y. Daily News handy, but I can only imagine what it looks like right now. The Mets are the popular choice to win the N.L. this year, but they can't do it with Angel Pagan, Brady Clark and Marlon Anderson playing 150 games.

I'm sure Julio Franco's phone number is somewhere on Minaya's desk today.

Mets are in big trouble. The fact that they have zero depth on a team with serious injury risks in Beltran, Delgado, and Alou speaks to the incompetence of Omar Minaya. Theres not a more overatted GM in all of professional sports than Minaya. Wow- he acquired Beltran, Pedro, Santana, Wagner- He really must know his baseball! Anyway, that Milledge trade is looking more and more terrible. He would have provided much needed youth and energy to the team and the nauseatingly inadequate return that Minaya received for Milledge are already banged up (Schneider and Church). And Im sure the Mets wouldnt attempt to think outside the box and allow Fernando Martinez to get a shot at the big league level.

The Mets are so top-heavy it's ridiculous. I said it weeks ago in a blog - they have so many old, injury-prone guys as it is, if they get an injury to Santana, Wright, or Reyes and they will be DONE.
