Is Barry Zito Done?

I know that he's not really on anyone's short list, but have you seen just how poorly he's pitching this spring? Forget the 14.92 ERA if you can for a second, and just take a look at the ghastly 0:10 K:BB ratio over 12 innings. Yeah, he's working on a new windup, trying to add velocity, blah blah blah, but that ratio is a giant red flag. He's going in the endgame in many drafts now, but I think I can find plenty of other guys to take a chance with late in my drafts.

Yes...next blog please!

Has Zito ever been linked to steroids? His performance sure has fallen off since his Cy Young season from a few years ago.

He had a 3.10 ERA over his last 9 starts last year, so I wouldn't base a "is he done?" question on a handful of spring training innings. Ugh, didn't realize his K:BB was that awful.

Sounds odd to say this about an $18 million/yr pitcher, but I'd take a chance on him for a buck in NL-only leagues - nothing more.

I don't understand how we can be having this conversation. He isn't in year 5 of a 7 year deal where the signing paid off up front and then sucked. This has to be a joke, how did they just sign him?? What in the world.

It is stunning to see how bad Zito has become. And it is occurring while he is still young and has moved from the AL to the NL.

If his fastball has lost that much velocity then he is going to get absolutely lit up this year since hitters will be able to adjust to his lolly-pop curve ball.

Jeff, I can tell you one guy I would draft ahead of Zito late in the draft. None other than you boy Johnny Cueto. Courtesy of Fake Teams:

One scout says [he]"is from another planet. He's like Pedro [Martinez]."

He still eats innings, but if the discussion is "is he done as a fantasy stud?", then the answer is absolutely YES. His command continues to erode and he does not have the devastating curve of yesteryear. My draft was Saturday and someone actually paid $9 for him in a 13 team 5x5. Guess there are still believers...but not me.

I saw the 0:10 ratio the other day and thought it was a misprint. No pitcher - certainly not the supposed ace of a staff - should ever have a stretch like that and expect to keep his job. As nayfel implied, I think we all thought the deal would be horrible at some point (if not the very beginning), but it sure became horrible quickly.

If he pitches as bad this season as he has this spring (and I know all about sample size, veterans working through stuff in spring, and so forth, so that's a big if), this will go down as the worst contract in baseball history.

Then again, if he wins the Cy Young this year and takes the Giants to the World Series it might *STILL* be considered the worst contract in history at some point.

Is it really all *that* surprising that Zito is falling apart? His K/9 rate has been steadily going downhill for a while now. And his BB/9 has, more or less, gone the other direction. He's done. He had a good career, won a Cy Young, dated Alyssa Milano. That's nothing to be ashamed of.

Which is worse, Zito's 0:10 K:BB ratio this spring or Rickie Weeks' 20 K in 40 AB and a 3:20 BB:K ratio? I guess at least Rickie can still steal bases.

I remember picking up zito out of free agents the year before he won the cy young... i guess it was just a fluke. As to the steroids comment, no way... his fastball hasnt touched over like 88 ever, has it?

What pitcher HASN'T dated Alyssa Milano? Pavano, Zito, Penny...maybe Randy Johnson hasn't gone there, but that's about it.

Beane and the Athletics must use the hell out of the young arms, knowing theyre not in the team's long term plans. Hopefully Haren is alrite for this season.
