Mama Said Knock You Out

So, I'm reading Saturday's AP game story for the Rays, and it says the Rays won "before a sellout crowd of 36,048 at Tropicana Field." I'm thinking, good for them. The poor people of Tampa have long suffered with absolutely nothing to cheer for. Good to see those fans showing up at the ballpark now that they have a good team. As a baseball fan, it's encouraging to see, considering the problems other successful franchises (Oakland, Atlanta) have had in getting the hometown to turn out.

Then, at the bottom of the article in the notes section, there's this:

"The sellout ... could be attributed in part to a postgame concert featuring LL Cool J ... All of the tickets were gone by last Tuesday ..."

OK, never mind.

Jason, there were exactly four sellouts in the majors on Saturday; at Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Busch Stadium and Tropicana Field. That means nobody else's Saturday promotion worked as well as the Rays; all paying customers are good ones. (BTW, Yankee Stadium was over 2,700 tix short of a sellout Saturday, on the last Old Timers Day ever in the yard, no less.)

Hammer was on the Tampa Bay bill, too, this summer. I'm sure Vitale was up front for that one.

Oh, I wasn't ripping Rays' fans; more so my own simple mindedness -- jumping to the conclusion that the good folks of Tampa were clamoring for Rays baseball even on hot mid-summer day with the beach beckoning in sunny Florida. If it took a little LL Cool J to get them to the park, well, at least it was LL Cool J. I once saw C&C Music Factory play after a game (but only stayed for a song or two).

Dodgers game wasn't a sellout?

"Come on let's sweat..."...

Dodgers were about 1,500 tix short of a sellout for the first Saturday night home game of the Manny Era (vs Arizona in a battle for first place as well).

Of course, capacity at the Trop is 36,048; both Dodger Stadium and Yankee Stadium hold considerably more, no?

Tampa has drawn 47 fans the last two nights, combined. I counted them all.
