Kirby Puckett passed away this evening, according to ESPNews. That's really awful.

Comments....

My top non-famous Kirby moments

1. Game 1 of the 1987 season. The over the wall catch in the 10th inning to rob Mickey Tettleton of a home run. His arm was well over the wall. Twins win 5-4 in extra innings. They never looked back. He goes 3-5 with a home run

2. Kirby's first all-star game. Leads off the game for the AL over Ricky Henderson. Stands in against Doc Gooden in his prime .. hits a shot up the middle and singles.

3. Late in his career (1995), plays a few innings at second base and shortstop in extra innings because the team wanted to use some pinch hitters to win the game and was short on infielders.

4. The splash with Al Newman at the end of big wins.

5. Kirby often early in his career saying he'd play for free because he loved the game so much. He got a lot of good press over that and it sounded like he really meant it.

6. Letting teammates rub his bald head for good luck.

My favorite non-famous Kirby moment:

It's the last week at old Comiskey, and my friend and I scored some bleacher seats. Perhaps because there's nothing to do and because Kirby is Kirby, the fans gave him a hard time because he kept scratching his butt. My favorite line: "Pick me a winner Kirby" (I agree...not too imaginative or mature, but I've always remembered it nonetheless).

Needless to say, Kirby had a smile on his face the entire time.

Some of his wife's alleged least favorite Kirby moments: him choking her. Some of a particular woman's alleged least favorite Kirby moments: him groping her in a restroom.

The guy was a great player, a winner and had a winning personality, but even Terrell Owens hasn't been accused of violent crimes against two women.
