My 44 is Better than Yours

Pete Rose is already planting the seed that if Jimmy Rollins matches his 44-game hitting streak it won't be as exceptional a feat as what Rose accomplished.

"Rose also addressed the 36-game hitting streak that Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins brings into the season. Rollins could have lost his rhythm at the plate, but doesn't have to worry about tiring as his streak continues, said Rose, who had a 44-game hitting streak in 1978. 'One thing about a hitting streak is the stamina,' Rose said."

What a very Pete Rose thing to do.

I'm sure Pete doesn't care how he gets his name in the Media again. It helps him push his wares on HSN or QVC. While I agree that doing it in one season could be tougher stamina-wise, I guess Pete didn't stop to think long enough to realize that the 33 came at the end of the season. Where in the season did you get your first 33, huh Pete?

It is a valid point... for me, at least, it's hard to consider it a single hitting streak when it will cut across two seasons.

Of course, that sentiment would probably get more sympathy if it had been raised by, say, anyone else on the planet besides Pete Rose.

Pete Rose needs to shut up, agree with Verizonkid. This is about him getting his name in the media because Rose is the worst type of narcissist. If Rose thinks Rollins will ever get his name in the same sentence as his, that is, that they'll ever be compared, the man is crazy; but we already knew that.

Rose makes a good point about needing stamina to hit in so many straight games, but a streak of that length is more of being in the "zone" than anything. I bet Rollins does not even reach 40 games as the off season is too much time to get back into a groove. I'm thinking he goes 2 for 4 opening night, 1 for 4 in game two, then we'll see the big zero in the hits column after game three.
