Holden will be out for between six and nine months after undergoing an operation to fix torn ligaments in his right knee Tuesday.

With so many knee surgeries in a relatively short time, there will surely be speculation that we've seen the end of Holden's playing career. He will obviously miss this summer's World Cup, though there was no guarantee he was going to make the U.S. squad anyway. It's a very tough outcome for a player with so much skill that has just been injury-bitten over the last few years.

Holden suffered a knee injury during Monday's U-21 match against Everton, and had to be replaced after just 23 minutes, the Daily Mail reports.

Holden was seen holding the back of his right knee while laying on the ground, but he was eventually able to run back to the dressing room to get checked out. The severity of the injury isn't known, but any knee injury with Holden should be considered serious due to his unlucky history.

Holden, who suffered a torn ACL while on international duty last July, could return to training in January, Sky Sports reports.

Holden has sustained three serious knee injuries in his career and there was legitimate concern that the latest one may have ended his time on the pitch. However, he's been rehabbing in the United States and is expected back in the UK in late December, with the hope of returning to team training some time in January.

Bolton confirmed that Holden suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee and will miss the next six months, reports the Daily Mail.

Holden was injured in the first half of the United States' win in the Gold Cup final over Panama. This is his second serious knee injury in as many years.

When healthy, Holden's only appearance for the Wanderers was a man of the match display against Aston Villa in a League Cup match. It must be frustrating for Holden to come all the way back from injury once, but he knows what it takes from going through it before.
