2025 Fantasy Outlook
Lopez's second year in Minnesota went much like his first, though he was a bit less effective overall with a 4.08 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 198:41 K:BB across 185.1 innings. He set a career high with 15 wins, but a 1.3 HR/9 was also the worst of his career. The right-hander isn't as dominant as a true ace with a 3.83 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across the past three seasons, though he's made 32 starts in each of those campaigns and has a 9.8 K/9. Lopez is a reliable fantasy asset but isn't likely to anchor most league-winning staffs unless he's able to produce closer to the 3.07 ERA he posted for Miami in 2021, which is the lone season in which he's produced an ERA below 3.60 through seven big-league campaigns. He'll turn 29 years old in March and just posted a career high average fastball velocity of 95 mph, so there shouldn't be major concerns for regression. Read Past Outlooks

Lopez had an impressive first season in Minnesota by finishing seventh in the AL Cy Young voting and going 2-0 and giving up one run in 12.2 innings in the postseason. Lopez changed his arsenal in the offseason to feature a sweeper as his primary off-speed pitch which resulted in more strikeouts. Lopez had a career-high 29.2% K% and 14.8% swinging K%. He allowed just a .215 wOBA and generated a 36.3% K% on his sweeper. He also set a new high 194 innings while maintaining career-best velocity (94.8 average mph fastball). The Twins signed him to a four-year, $73.54 million contract extension after his trade from Miami as they believe they traded for a true ace and felt validated by his playoff performance.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Minnesota listening to offers
The Twins have listened to trade inquiries on Lopez, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It remains a long shot that the Twins will trade Lopez, who is under contract for a reasonable $65.2 million over the next three years. However, it's possible the sky-high cost of free-agent starting pitching could lead to a team offering the Twins a boatload in exchange for Lopez. The righty held a 4.08 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 198:41 K:BB over 185.1 innings in 2024.
